  2. Sep 24,  · Post punk? Joy Division DEFINES post punk. New wave? No. That would be later with New Order, who practically define that genre later on. Their crappy lead vocals, and their first LP place New Order in both sub-genres, so spot on with that. After NO's 1st LP they expanded clearly into the New Wave, Dance, EDM, and other sub-genres that I'm not /5().

  3. Joy Division recorded two albums before singer Ian Curtis tragically took his own life in But what the Manchester quartet lacked in longevity, it more than made up for in quality. The band’s only two studio albums were groundbreaking and helped shape the sound and mood of the alternative music that followed in the band’s wake.

  5. Being the record by which I discovered Joy Division (and possibly because of that fact) it is still my favourite. I didn't know it at the time, but it's a fairly random collection of studio out-takes from the band's three-year history (the original first vinyl disc) and a live recording of the band's final concert at Birmingham University in May (the original second vinyl disc)/5(17).

At the end of Grant Gee's documentary "Joy Division," there is a great line -- "The albums are 'Unknown Pleasures' and 'Closer,' and everything else is just memory merchandising" -- and I suppose this album falls into the category of the latter. I bought the double LP "Still" as a year-old in looking for new musical horizons/5(31).

  7. Still was an attempt to sweep up any unreleased tracks along with a live recording of Joy Division's last concert. It was released partly in response to the number of Joy Division bootlegs that had appeared and the title alludes to this; the original bootleggers used stills to.
